Overview

This section contains brief details about my sand collection. The collection is listed annually starting in November 2006. At the moment details are brief, at least until I decide on a suitable method of showing the entire collection online, each and every sample.

My sand collection is entirely self-collected, in that each sample is physically collected in the field personally, none of the samples shown here have been traded in any way or have been gifted by friends, family or fellow enthusiasts. The collection is restricted geographically to the British Isles and particularly Scotland.

To some collectors this might seem rather limiting but my research indicates that the widely varied geology and abundant coastline of Scotland will keep me collecting for many years to come. At a rough estimate it should be relatively easy to collect well in excess of 10,000 samples from Scotland alone. At my present rate of collecting, that's a day a week for some 10 years. So plenty to keep me busy as I try to achieve the collecting targets I've set myself, first 1000 samples, then 5000 and then 10,000 samples.

My collecting is not only restricted to traditional sand, in fact almost anything that will pass a 2.00 mm sieve is likely to go into the collection. That includes clay, crushed rock flour, fuel ash and so on. I've drawn the line at collecting soil samples and processed sand but have started to include sand made from crushed rock specimens such as sandstone, shale and so on.
