Sundries

As with all hobbies there are always a few small, but often essential, bits and pieces that make life that much simpler. Sand collecting is no exception:

In the field...

35mm film canister - recommended standard sand measure

Fishing tackle bag - for carrying your samples

Food & drink - allows you to collect for longer

Geological map - finding new types of sand

Maps - for finding collecting locations and not getting lost

Mobile phone - to call for assistance

Permanent marker pens - for labelling sampling bags

Small funnel - for pouring sand into display containers

Spare sampling bags - in case you run out

Spare spoons - in case you leave one behind

Tea strainer - useful in the field

Tide tables - to prevent you getting stranded or drowned!

Tweezers - for removing unwanted debris from samples

Waterproofs - for collecting during the British summer

Warm clothing - for collecting in winter

For the workshop...

Flour sieve - also useful in the field

Mortar & pestle - for crushing clay & silt samples

Hand grinding mill - useful for sandstone and cried clay

Magnet - to test for magnetite and other iron-rich ores

And anything else that helps your ability to get out there and add samples to your collection.
